Luckily, I knew a dog trainer that told me I needed to feed her 3 times a day. I don't remember if she chewed her food. I'm sure she did. | | Nick Names: | Pretty Girl, Rumorrella |

Spike has 39484 views

|
| Pet Name: | Spike | | Age: | 18-24 months | | Gender: | Male | | Breed: | Rat Terrier | | Weight: | 10-15 lb | | Funny Story: | Spike can jump 2 feet off the ground without a running start. He bounces like a ball. This may explain how he injured his paw 2 weeks ago. | | Sleeping quarters: | Next to me in bed,Curled up on my lap or in my arms. | | Bio: | Spike is a white RAT TERRIER with brown spots. He was originally a foster from The Lee County Animal Shelter. I got him in June 2006. He was fiesty and scrawny when I met him. When I would clean the dog kennels at the shelter, I would let Spike out to run around, he made it his business to go to every kennell and bark at the other dogs. He was always getting beat up, so, I took him home one day. I never gave him back. Eventhough he has bitten me so many times, that I can't count, I still love him. He was just misunderstood. I realized that he was either not socialized properly, didn't get enough stimulation or was just neglected his first year of life. | | Tricks: | Sit, |

Just being Spike

Spike spends a lot of his time watching me to see when I am going to the door. He loves to walk. My husband and I try to walk him, and my other dogs at least 2 times a day. Our walks usually last for thirty minutes each.
I'm working on teaching Spike not to poop in the house. He is getting better. He also does not bark as much as he use too. He barked for everything. He especially likes to bark when he gets excited.

Taking Spike for Walks

Spike gets so excited when he knows that we are going for a "walk". He starts barking and jumping 2 feet off the ground. I always insist that he sits before I put his leash on him. He is learning to calm down. My husband and I try not to act as if his behavior is a big deal. We make sure we praise him and give him treats, when he does the right thing.
He pooped in the house yesterday. I did not make a big deal of it. When he pooped outside this afternoon, I praised him a lot. I hope he gets the message.
I had one person inquire about Spike yesterday. She wanted him for an 80 year old man. Spike has too much energy for an older person. He really needs someone who is going to get out and do things with him.

Spike Goes To Meet Prospective Adopters

We are driving Spike to Myrtle Beach this afternoon to meet his prospective parents. I am both excited and nervous for him. I want them to like him. I have taken care of Spike for the past six weeks. I know he is special. When I saw him at the animal shelter, I knew he didn't belong there. I hope I have provided a loving, comfortable and stable environment for him. I love you Spike. I wish you luck!

Spike Didn't Get A Home

I'm really sad for Spike. He did not make a good impression at all. He growled at his prospective parents and their dog. He was very aggressive. He is fine around my dogs. I have to admit, when we first brought him home, he was a little aggressive. I thought it was because he was coming from the animal shelter. He did get beat up by another dog one day. I believe this may have something to do with his behavior. The prospective owners were wonderful! They were retired, were putting up a fence, had "I love my terrier" bumper stickers, walked their dog up to 3 times a day, and their dog goes to doggie daycare. They were perfect, but Spike was awful. I don't know what to do now. I need to retrain Spike.

Spike's afternoon walk

Before we could even get to the door, Spike was already barking and jumping. He loves walking. He watches everything. I think he is on sensory overload. I praise him when he settles down. I think he is learning. It is a very slow process

Spike's Tantrum

I gave Spike a bone to chew on, but he dropped it and walked away. When I tried to retrieve the ball, he growled at me. Of course, I sent him to his kennel. Today was a little disappointing. I thought he was beginning to trust me and not feel as if he has to guard his food. I read an article about what to do with a dog who has food aggression. I need to feed him from my hand for a week and gradually get him to eat out of the bowl. Wish me look.

Rumors Medical Problems

Rumor has been having seizures. This scares me a lot. The Vet ran a CBC test and checked her out. He did not see any immediate problems. He is supposed to call me with the test results. In the meantime, Rumor is on phenobarbital. Why can't I claim my dog on my taxes? They should offer a tax break for pet owners. It does not have to be a huge tax break either. What if you can claim your pet on your taxes, provided that, he or she is spayed or neutered and current on vaccinations. Wouldn't this help control the out of control pet population? I may start looking into this.

Stray Dog is driving Spike Crazy
9/2/2007 5:22:12 AM
|
|
We have had a stray lab mixed hanging around the house for a couple of days. Spike barks non stop. It is driving me crazy. I am going to attempt to take the dog to the animal shelter. He can't stay because Spike has a problem with larger dogs and I can't afford to keep another dog. I called animal control, but she may not come out until Tuesday.
I'm headed to the shelter to put in my four volunteer hours. I've been feeling really sad about going out there lately. I think it is starting to get to me. I want to continue to volunteer for a long time. I am in the process of starting my own pet education business. I hope it works out.

Spike is a keeper

I haven't written in a long time. Since my last entry, we have decided to keep Spike. Over the year that I fostered him, there were two people interested in him, even with all of his bad behaviors. In December 2007, a man inquired about him. I thought I would be able to let him go, but I couldn't. Eventhough he had bitten me numerous times, was food aggressive and people aggressive, there was something that drew me to him.
Well, he is happy, healthy and still crazy. I love him so much and I will never give up on Spike, aka mc (mini cujo).
