My hubby and I were thinking strongly about getting a Chihuahua, and had one picked out and everything. We were waiting for the dog's owners to get back to us. In the meantime, we were visiting a local animal shelter just for fun, and that's when we met our dog. Her name was Ginger at the time. She was 5 months old and brand new to the shelter. We spent some time with her in the play room and decided to put a hold on her. She wasn't yet adoptable because she hadn't been spayed yet. Since she was a very adoptable breed in high demand, we decided to jump at the chance. Less than a week later, we adopted her. She's very mellow, doesn't bark or whine, is playful, but likes to sleep, loves fetch, and is almost potty trained.

Since she doesn't bark, we had to get a laugh out of her hyper day, as we call it. After about 2-3 weeks of having her, she woke up extremely hyper one day. She was bouncing around the apartment (literally pouncing) and spinning 180 degrees one way then the other over and over again. I was in the kitchen doing dishes and I could hear her in the other room just having a blast. I got my phone and was taking a video of it and she sensed me watching. Then she wanted to play with me so she bounced over to me and stuck her little tail stub in the air - wagging - for a few seconds, jumped up into a sitting position and gave me the craziest look, then pounced on the floor and let out the funniest bark before bounding off around the room again.

We aren't sure what her first 5 months of life were like. Since we got her from a shelter - having been surrendered by her previous owners - they didn't even know. She doesn't guard her food, and she's not scared of a raised hand, so she doesn't appear to have been abused. She was healthy when the shelter got her. She just needed a few vaccines and spayed. She is, however, afraid of cars and loud noises.
