Petition against Pit bull ban and Breed Specific laws in Massachusetts

A few representatives from our state of Massachusetts are proposing to ban "pit bulls" and other popular dog breeds. We are petitioning not to ban dogs, but to enforce stricter leash laws and have better records for licensing dogs. Any dog can be taught anything, banning one or more breeds will not help. If passed, it will cause an even larger overflow in our shelters, law-abiding citizens to move out of the Commonwealth, non-law-abiding citizens will continue to train dogs to be vicious; pit bulls, rottweilers, doberman pinchers or otherwise.

I think this ban is a bunch of "bull"! I have a pittbull myself, along with a rottweiler, and they are the best dogs I have been around! I have 2 children myself and those dogs are just great with kids! People just need to be more responsible when they own a dog. And the cities should be stricter with leash laws! If people were held accountable for what their dog does, then it would be better for the dog. Too many people just don't care. That dog gets taken away, they go out and get another one. They should be put on a national list to where they can never own another dog...Ever!!! But they find it easier to punish the dog. That's what gives these beautiful dogs a bad reputation...Irrisponsible owners! Just shoot 'em all!

Don't ban the dogs, ban or train the owners. I've had 2 pitbulls in my life and they were both sweet and gentle. All dogs need to be socialized with other dogs and definitely need to be made part of the family. Big breeds require large yards and daily walks to alleviate stress. Can you imagine living up to 15 or more years in an enclosed area? It would drive most of us crazy and we wouldn't be very sociable or passive. All preanimal owner should be required to take a class before choosing and owning any animal. Please spay/neuter your pet and adopt pets that already exist. Too many animals are already euthanized every year.

I've seen this popping up all over! Why dont people open up there eyes and see that if a dog is hostile it could never be the gogs fault! I mean if you have say a pitbull in a bad environment then oviously its going to be bad, but raise it in a good loving home and itll be a good care free happy go lucky pup. Thje same rules apply to humans!!! did you see that news story about the little girl whos lip got bitten off! And that was by an (almost) human being!!!!! If you want to ban something, ban humans, they cause all the problems!

I do not believe it is necessary to ban pitbulls or any other dog breeds. I have a rottweiler, who is so sweet and wonderful with kids and my other pets. My friend also has 6 pitbulls who are actually therapy dogs. This shows you it is not the dogs fault at all. A dogs owner can teach a dog anything, bad or good. I truly believe it is the owners fault in almost all dog attacks. I do not think it is right to ban any breed of dog.

I completely agree. I'm a huge fan of "The Dog Whisperer" and even Cesar Milan will tell you that 100% of the time, it is the OWNER and not the Dog. Yes, a Pit Bull has natural born "feelings", but it's up to the Owner to TRAIN them in the WRONG way - teaching it to be protective in a Violent Matter. I think Banning PitBulls is stupid and just a "lazy" way to RID a problem, instead of the real issue....THE OWNERS!! Thanks :)

That is messed up. I have a pitt bull and she is nothing but a big baby. My dad also has a pitt bull and he is the same way. I dont think you should ban the breed because of the people who get them for the wrong reasons. Its not the dogs fault there are stupid people in the world who train there dogs to be mean!

This new law that Massachusetts is putting out is completely unfair to the families of pitbulls everywhere. These dogs are great caring and loving dogs that have a special bond with those that raised them. Myself, being a pitbull owner, I feel that this law would thwart any progress that could be made towards acceptance in society. We must say NO to SB 861! NO to BSL

banning any breed is stupid dogs are dogs its the way you raise them,any animal will be mean if you mistreat it.that is so wrong to ban any breed.

pit bulls are innocent! their owners train them to be protective and vicious so why should they be punished for other peoples actions!!!!!!!!!

My opinion is that its not the pitbulls fault so they shouldn't be banned from anywhere. Its the people that train them to be that way. Just think of it this way: if someone locked u up, treated u horribly, then proceeded to make u fight for u life...I don't know about u but I'm pretty sure I would be mean too. & I some what agree with nofmax...but I think if someone is to get a pit they should have to go threw the same thing as a person who is trying to buy a gun. They should have to fill out paper work & have their background checked. If they already own one, they should have to register their dog so they state knows that they have a pit & they should get a background check just to make sure. So if the dogs get punished for their owners...its like trying to punish a gun for the shooter. Kinda foolish & ignorant if ya ask me.
